The expression, "What goes around comes around", has a whole new meaning for me. In December of 2001 my appendix became inflamed and before it could be removed it leaked poisons into my body. January 11, 2002 found me in the emergency room and within 36 hours I was given only a 30% chance of survival. After surgeries and medication the last chance opportunity was to try 2 units of platelets. After they were injected into my system it took only 24 hours for my body to begin to fight off the infection and the systems in my body that were in the process of shutting down began to stabilize. The struggle to survive now had a chance of success. Why does "What goes around comes around" have meaning for me? I have been a blood donor since the 1980s and have been donating platelets for over 17years. Until my near tragedy I never really understood the gift of life that a donation of blood or platelets really meant. I owe my life to two people that took the time to sit in a chair and share themselves with a stranger in need. They are my heroes.
